5 Months Old

After a really shitty few weeks of struggling with one thing or another, this month has been a real turning point! We had a little blip somewhere in the middle where not only did your reflux medication stop working but you also developed a chest infection too and needed a course of antibiotics. But that impacted on us for like 2-3 days tops and then normal service resumed.

So, earlier this month we began offering you your first spoonfuls of solid food and it seemed to go down well. In fact, it seemed to only increase your hunger! We have upped your feeds twice this month from 7oz to 9oz each and started offering you solid food twice a day. You seem to really enjoy your food and aren't overly bothered about porridge but love pureed fruit or vegetables and have even begun holding & guiding the spoon as we feed you.

In the last few weeks, you offered us the best gift a baby can give their mama & dada..... SLEEP!! At the beginning of the month, over the course of a few days you seemed to start sleep longer and more soundly, and shortly after that you also decided you no longer wanted your dream feed. I guess you are making well & truly sure you fill up your tum during the day now :D

I attribute the better sleep regime partly to making the decision to wean you early (yeah, yeah, yeah guidelines state 6 months! but every babies needs are different) But I also reckon the reason you don't require mummy to come soothe you back to sleep all through the night is because at the ripe age of 4 months old you suddenly decided to develop a thumb sucking habit...

So I'm not crazy about the idea. But d'you know what? We went down the dummy route with Dexter and apart from the fact that for months he'd have me up like 10 times a night putting it back in until he was big enough to do it himself, it was really hard to get rid of it, He gave it away willingly at the age of 3 so that the 'dummy fairy' could send new ones for his baby sister. But I listened to him sob himself to sleep for days missing it and it was so hard.

I panic went on Google searching ways to break your thumb sucking habit & apparently between the ages of 2-4 most children give it up of their own accord when they find other ways to soothe themselves anyway. You literally only do it when you're tired (or occasionally hungry) so we figured what's the harm in trying a different way. Apart from the fact that you look super cute, because you have found your thumb, you settle yourself in & out of sleep so much better at night.

Since life seemed to be settling right back down again and things weren't quite so stressful & hectic, daddy took some (much needed) time off work and we took you on your first trip to the seaside. The truth is you slept for most of it, but you soaked up the rays, breathed in the sea air and watched Dexter hit the arcades :D

My new favourite thing this month has to be seeing those cute little teeth of yours when you smile.

Your new favourite things this month are:
  • Playing with your feet - you've only recently discovered them and that they do in fact reach all the way to your mouth so you think they're tons of fun.
  • Playing with Dexter's toy cars, he's learning to share...
  • Blowing raspberries :P

When we weighed you last week you now come in at 14lb 12oz and wear mostly 3-6 month clothing plus a few bits in 6-9 months now too. You're still in size 3 nappies but we put you in a size 4+ at night - even though they're a bit big, you sleep so long we need the extra absorbency and Activfit don't do a plus size in 3.

You nap like FIVE TIMES a day but only for about 20 minutes at a time. I feel like I spend most of my day trying to get you to sleep. You still get bored easy & prefer to be carried round with me most of the time (even though my arms really can't take it anymore!) but this month you have become so much more content and adorable. We're looking forward to seeing what milestones you'll hit next... xx
